Creating in Africa
The artist unfolds her memories of a one year journey, in 2001 in Benin, , interspersed with short stays in Senegal, Togo and Ghana.
Through the intimacy of her drawing sessions, and exchange with African models, Marie Denise captures impressions and feelings on paper. Her charcoal drawings of this African encounter are tinted with the colors of pain and of resignation revealing a world of intimate secrets.
The African journey played a major influence in Marie Denise ‘s inspiration anchoring her African identity in all her future works. The artist plunges to the source of her ancestral culture, to the roots of Africa, which wetted her imagination. Inspired dby proverbs, sayings, images, stories or songs related to the oral traditions of Africa she draws, paints and takes photographs.
